About the event
Harlem flourished in the 1920s, energized by the Great Migration of African Americans from the South who were looking for jobs in New York City. The first generation of photographers, painters, and muralists tapped into new calls for expressing racial pride and optimism; the second worked through the Depression and World War II, carrying on this inspiration and deepening the depictions.
