Our Spiritual Leader
Barbara Cohen has been the spiritual leader of Congregation Ahavath Sholom since July of 2005. Prior to that, Barbara served as spiritual leader of Temple Anshe Amunim of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where she also was cantorial soloist and religious education director beginning in 1994. A popular and passionate student and teacher of Torah, Kabbalah and Hebrew, Barbara teaches adult education for our congregation and has taught for congregations in the Northeast and Florida and for local and regional Hadassah and Federation groups.
Earlier in her life, Barbara was a scrap iron and steel broker in Chicago and an interior designer and brings her broad life experience to interpretation and understanding of Jewish texts and traditions. The featured vocalist with the Klezmer band, The Knaydels, Barbara shares her love of Yiddishkeit with audiences and in everything she does. Barbara has been married for 35 years to her husband, Mark, a retired oral surgeon, and they are the parents of two sons, Alex and Philip.
